Pedro Luiz Borges Chaffe, Brazil, BYEE 2006
Pedro Chaffe participated in the BYEE field trip in 2006, and says the experience brings him nothing but good memories.
“It was just an incredible experience. Apart from what we learned directly from the lectures, the experience that changes you the most is to be around people from different cultures, and what you learn from them sometimes changes your point of view.”

With the help of an experimental basin, known as “parshall gutter”, Pedro is measuring the height of water of the river in a native forest. The “parshall gutter”, is a very efficient method of measuring water flow and residues flow, which were the core of Pedro’s study.
He is currently finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering with an internship in his University’s hydrology lab. He is working on four projects involving two different water courses in the Santa Catarina state, in the south of Brazil.

His work is an expansion of his BYEE project. “I was very proud of that project, and now I am doing the same type of monitoring in other water courses of the region,” he explained. Pedro’s winning BYEE project was entitled A Comparative Hydrological Study in the Southern Brazilian Mountainous Region” and analyzed the impact of commercial tree planting versus the impact of native trees on the local hydrology.

Pedro is planning to start a master’s in hydrology monitoring next year, thereby showing that his interest in the subject has only increased since his project was chosen for the BYEE Program.
