Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, Philippines
Welcome to the Philippines entry section for the 2008 Bayer Young Environmental Envoy. If you are between 18 to 24 years old, a Filipino student presently enrolled, and with a passion for the environment and a keen interest in Sustainable Development, you are eligible to join the search for the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy and Eco-Minds Forum. You can win an all-expense paid trip to Germany in November 2008 or a slot in the Eco-Minds Forum in New Zealand in May 2009.
During the regional finals in May 2008, a panel of judges will determine which applicants fall under the BYEE and under the Eco-Minds programs. Twelve BYEEs and three Eco-Minds winners will be selected and will participate in a live-in Eco-Camp to be held in a local venue.
The top four BYEEs will join delegates from sixteen other countries on a weeklong all-expense paid trip to Germany from November 2 to 7, 2008 and will have an opportunity to gain new insights on the broad spectrum of environmental protection measures employed in Germany.
The three Eco-Minds winners selected based on the innovative ideas and solutions will be sent to the Eco-Minds Forum in New Zealand in May 2009. This forum focuses on Sustainable Development in a unique way by bringing together students of science and technology, engineering, social science, economics, and management from different countries to participate in a solution-oriented group work. The international background of the participants introduces a multi-cultural dimension to Eco-Minds.

How to join
Fill up the application form and attach a recent 2” x 2” color photo of yourself together with the two requirements:
- In no more than 1,000 words, write your individual proposal for a simple and do able environmental project in your community or school that addresses a specific environmental problem. First, describe the current situation and environment-related problems in your local area or school, and the relevance of addressing this concern. Then state the objectives of your project, and indicate resource requirements like budget, manpower, facilities as well as institutions/groups involved. Be sure that the resources for supporting your project are realistic and within reach. Specify your deliverables and target date for the completion of the project. The project must be completed or come close to completion by September 1, 2008.
- If you were asked to think of a NEW or never-been tried solution to the environmental problem you are addressing in your project proposal, what would it be? Please discuss the concept and the basis for you idea, and explain why you think your novel solution can work. The solution can be scientific, technological, social, economic or political in nature. Please limit your exposition to no more than 1,000 words.
Eligibility for Entry
- Filipino citizen, 18 to 24 years old by September 1, 2008.
- College student enrolled in any CHED-recognized institution as of March 1, 2008. Students graduating in March 2008 are eligible to join.
- Must have no failing mark in his/her college studies.
- Actively involved in environmental activities/projects or possesses a strong interest in scientific projects/activities focusing on environmental protection or linked to the concept of Sustainable Development.
- Willing to travel overseas, of good moral character, and should be able to work well within a group.
Children and relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity, or persons, whether they are related or not, living with any of the following are not eligible to join the contest:
- Employees of Bayer and Bayer CropScience, their agencies or interdependent contractors engaged in the project.
- Individuals or companies engaged in the development, production or distribution of materials for the project.
Procedures/rules
- All entries must be accompanied by a 2 x 2 color photo of yourself and the two required write-ups. Incomplete application forms and entry requirements will not be processed.
- Secure the endorsement of a faculty member or anyone of the following: the school academic department head or college dean or academic vice president or president.
- All applications should reach Bayer by March 28, 2008.
- Write ups must be typewritten in English and double-spaced. Handwritten or e-mail entries will not be accepted.
- Before end of April 2008, shortlisted candidates will be required to submit the following:
1. Soft copy of the write-ups
2. Proof of awards received
3. College transcript of records
4. NSO-certified copy of their birth certificate - Project proposals which are adaptations/upgrades of already existing projects are acceptable, but the entry will be judged solely on the basis of new elements introduced and their added value. Pre-existing work or accomplishments prior to the official start-up date will not be given any credit.
- Successful finalists shall be asked to begin implementing their respective projects by June 2008. A premature start-up of the proposed project will be grounds for disqualification.
- While the project proposal should be the applicant's own concept, the project itself may be carried out by any number of people, with the applicant taking a significant role in its implementation.
- The project must be completed or come close to completion by September 1, 2008.
- The judges' decision is final for all aspects of the competition.
Judging and selection
- Applicants will be shortlisted based on project content, leadership and environmental know-how and involvements.
- A panel of judges will interview each of the shortlisted candidates to determine their intelligence and understanding of environmental issues, their communication and people skills, the feasibility of their project proposals and their innovative spirit and ability to come up with new ways of doing things. Based on their strengths and inclinations, the judges will decide which candidates will fall under the BYEE and under the Eco-Minds programs.
- Shortlisted candidates from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will be interviewed in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, respectively. Bayer Philippines, Inc. will bear all costs for the travel, meals, and accommodations of shortlisted candidates going on the interview.
- Successful BYEEs and Eco-Minds winners will be required to attend an environmental live-in workshop called the BYEE Eco-Camp. All charges for the travel, accommodations, and upkeep of participants will be shouldered by Bayer Philippines, Inc.
- At the end of the Eco-Camp, 12 BYEEs will be asked to make a presentation before another panel of judges. They will be given the formal title of Bayer Young Environmental Envoy during an awarding ceremony. The 3 Eco-Minds winners will also be awarded during the BYEE awarding ceremony.
- The Top 4 BYEEs and will be given the opportunity to participate in a weeklong all-expense paid study trip to Germany on November 2-7, 2008. The three Eco-Minds winners will be the Philippine representatives to the Eco-Minds Forum in New Zealand come May 2009.
