Shuying, Singapore, BYEE 2005
For Shuying, environmental protection is closely related to her passion: After the BYEE programme, she and two other former BYEE were selected for an Earthwatch expedition to assist in the conservation of whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef, Australia.
There, they were actively engaged in data collection and processing and enjoyed snorkeling with whale sharks, the plankton-eating giants of the seas. "The whale shark expedition left a deep impression on me. I was very happy to be able to get hands-on with the fieldwork and do my bit for the whale sharks, an animal that I had learnt to love over those few days," says Shuying, recalling her experiences at Ningaloo Reef.

Thinking back to the field trip, Shuying mainly stresses the networking idea of BYEE: "Participating in BYEE has opened doors to many other opportunities to help out in environmental work, while having fun at the same time. I truly believe that the global linkages that we have forged through this program will prove useful when this generation of young people takes up leadership positions around the world in future."
In 2006, Shuying graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor in Environmental Engineering and currently works for Hyflux, a project which entails oil recycling. About her job she says gladly: "Working for an environmental cause has always been something that I wanted to do."
