Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, South Africa
THE BYEE programme is a ground-breaking global environment education initiative for the youth, organised by Bayer and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The aim of the programme is to develop young environmental leaders and boost the level of environmental awareness among the youth. South Africa joins the BYEE programme for the first time this year.
As part of the South African leg of the programme, two youths will be selected to attend a week-long, all expenses paid educational field trip to Germany from 2-7 November, 2008.

How to participate
Please note that for this launch year, the selection criterion for South Africa is as below. This will be revised annually.
Eligibility
- Youth between the ages of 18-24.
- Actively involved in community environmental activities/projects.
- Registered students at tertiary institutions would be preferred.
- SA Citizen
To enter, students must:
- Submit a 1000 word essay on how their programme or project has or is addressing one of the following environmental challenges in their community/city:
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Water Conservation
- Litter and Waste Management
- Energy Efficiency
- Climate Change - Have a good command of the English language.
- Complete supplied application form and forward all requested documentation.
- Submit supporting visual material (pictures or video) to highlight the project.
- Be willing and able to travel to Europe in November, as part of the prize.
- Also be willing to participate in environmental projects approved by Bayer, for at least 2 years following this competition.
NB: Any short-listed applicant, including the winner, who fails to meet any of the requirements specified above, will be replaced by another candidate selected by the Judging Panel.
Selection Process
While the applicant is required to enter the competition as an individual, the project itself may be carried out by any number of people, with the applicant taking a significant role in its implementation. Projects will be judged along the five (5) specified focus areas, and the value they add to the community/cities.
Applicants will be short-listed based on project content, leadership and environmental know-how and involvement.
The Envoys will be selected in three stages.

- Stage 1
Applicants must complete and submit an application form and the required essay. - Stage 2
Ten (15) short-listed candidates will appear before a judging panel to present their essays, out of which 5 will be selected. - Stage 3 (Final)
Finalists participate in a discussion forum on sustainable development issues before a panel of judges. The top and most deserving applicants will be selected as the Bayer Young Environmental Envoys, and win a week-long trip to Germany.
NB: A panel will interview each of the short-listed candidates to determine their understanding of environmental issues, their communication and people skills, the feasibility of their projects and their potential for innovation.
Schedule
Applications must be submitted between 8 July, 2008 and 30 August, 2008. Short-listed candidates will be contacted for a presentation to the panel. The winning candidates will be announced at a special event in October 2008.

- The Application Form must be completed in full.
- Submit the following documents together with the application form:
- Copy of ID document and or Student Card
- If student, copy of 2007 academic transcript - Attach a copy of the essay
- Essays must be type-written in English and double-spaced. E-mail entries welcome.

Rules
- Employees of Bayer and its subsidiaries, their agencies, families and contractors engaged in the project, are not eligible to enter.
- Incomplete application forms and entry requirements will automatically be disqualified.
- Student applicants must secure the endorsement of a faculty member, principal, dean, or department head.
- All applications must reach Bayer by 17h00, Friday 30 August, 2008.
- The judges' decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
